The Maine Council for the Social Studies will be having their annual conference on March 24th, 2025!
The theme of the 2025 Conference is Expanding Democracy. 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a landmark piece of federal legislation prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. Sadly, despite how far we've come, many in the U.S. still face barriers to voting. As educators, the MCSS is committed to ensuring we have a democracy where all people have a say in the decisions that impact their lives. We can work together towards meaningful change that brings more people into and engages them with the democratic process itself, reduces those remaining barriers, and fosters a better understanding of rights and responsibilities through our work educating and empowering the next generation of voters and leaders.
This year, the MCSS will feature three workshop on session tracks: Wabanaki Studies, African-American Studies, Literacy, and Elementary Social Studies Education. Some of their featured session leaders include: Pamela Cummings from the Abyssinian Meeting House; Fiona Hopper and Nolan Altvater of Portland Public Schools; Adam Schmitt of the University of Southern Maine; Bri Lolar, Maine DOE Wabanaki Studies Specialist; Meadow Dibble of the Atlantic Black Box Project
